Pattachitra is one of the oldest and most intricate art forms of Odisha, dating back over a thousand years. The name comes from the Sanskrit words Patta (cloth) and Chitra (picture), and true to its name, it is traditionally painted on cloth or dried palm leaves using natural colours. Every piece tells a story—often drawn from the epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, or tales of Lord Jagannath—brought to life through fine lines, detailed borders, and rich, earthy hues. More than just visual beauty, Pattachitra is an unbroken thread of Odisha’s cultural identity, passed down through generations of artisans. But like many traditional crafts, it faces the challenge of survival in a rapidly changing, mass-produced world.
